Bottlenecked machine Looking for what new cpu + motherboard is best for around 400 quid

Hi Everyone,

Last year I had a bit of student loan from my uni and as I do a lot of video editing work I though I would get a new graphics card. I got a GTX 970 ever since I put it in everything runs awfully in my machine. I replaced a GTX 550 that seemed to run everything ok but lagged when I editing. I since found out it is probably due to a bottleneck from my CPU. I'll be honest I didn't really research anything, I just got caught up in the hype of the new GTX card for some reason.

Basically I am wondering if anyone could let me know what CPU and motherboard would be a good option to get for around 400 pounds that would pair well with my GTX 970. I do game a fair bit, but video editing is my priority.

My current CPU is an AMD Phenom ii x4 965 3.4 GHZ
Current motherboard - Giga-Byte GA-MA790XT-UD4P (rev. 1.0)
16gb of ram
ssd and 2 HDDs

Sorry for my computing ignorance,

Thanks everyone!

P.S. In regards to playing with my current set up

Playing counter strike, it never looks smooth but it tells me I get 40-100 fps but it zooms up and down all the time. The only game that has ever run amazingly smooth was dark souls 2 which was a pleasure to play. Most games don't work at all without huge stuttering and overall I have been pretty bummed out about PC gaming since I bottlenecked my machine.

Yea, that CPU is definitely a bottleneck. Using as much of your current system as possible, I would say this would fit well for you. You get i7 performance, without the higher price tag. I could have went cheaper, on the motherboard, but not knowing the speed of your ram, I decided to play it safe. What is the make/model, of your current power supply?

  2. It's too bad you didn't have an am3/3+ board. Could save some $ with an fx chip which would do well for your video related work and still game decent.

Odd your having issues in cs:go though. I play it on a 965 myself but with a 7850 2gb gpu and I don't get any stutter at all in it.
