Hi there! I recently bought this router for my home. My father from old generation has problems when watching movies so I decided to buy an ext HDD and use it as network storage. Nowadays I see many problem ext HDD and now don't know what to buy. I was watching for Seagate Expnasion 3TB and for now I think it's the best choice. Please help me to decide what to buy :)

Then you have nothing to worry about, since the router manufacturer has given you green light to go with whatever drive you want. I don't really know what you mean by special HDD for routers. I guess I'm not familiar with such a model. Basically go with whatever drive you want if there's no problem with the router. :)

Hey there, ryderbg.

No matter the brand you should check the router's User Manual for the maximum supported drive size as some have issues with larger capacity drives (more than 2TB). You should also make sure that the model is compatible with the router. There's usually a compatibility list on the manufacturer's website. If you can't find that information, you could simply contact the router manufacturer's customer support and ask for more info.

I found this table on ASUS site - http://event.asus.com/2009/networks/disksupport/ - but my router isn't there. According to the table, all AC routers support 4tb in NTFS file system. I've tried Kingston 64gb USB flash stick and it worked fine. But will Seagate ext HDDs work with ASUS routers?

Well if we can assume that the same goes for your model as well (even if it's not on the table), then I'd say you are good to go. Especially if there are no specific models mentioned and there are only capacities and file systems.

However I'd still recommend that you contact the router manufacturer's customer support, just to be on the safe side. :)

I asked both companies about this. Seagate gave me and answer that they have special HDD for routers and my choice is not. So they not recommend. ASUS took them 1 week to answer me but they told me that every ext HDD is compatible with this router.
