Upgrading my current system - Some advise on my selection of components and compatibility please? :)

Good day everyone,

I have been lurking and reading quite a bit over the last week since I discovered Tomshardware.
Today is my first post on the forum woohoo! hehe

I am currently looking to upgrade my PC at home, I mostly use it for streaming and gaming.

The system I have at the moment is as follows:

MSI AM1I AMD AM1 Chipset SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini-ITX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 5350 Socket Athlon Quad-Core (2.05GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 4x Cores) APU
Crucial 8GB 1600MHz 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3
Intel 120 GB SSD
Seagate 500 GB HHD
Gigabyte Geforce 950 GTX - Recently acquired
750W Power supply

I am looking to upgrade my motherboard, CPU and RAM. As I am from South Africa my prices will be converted from Rands to US Dollars as I got it from one of our local suppliers.

They are as follows:

ASUS M5A97 R2.0, AM3+, AMD 970 Chipset, ATX - $ 126.00
AMD Vishera FX-8320, 3.50GHz, Octa Core, AM3+, Black Edition - $ 205.00
Corsair Vengeance Pro, 16GB Kit, DDR3-2133, CL11, Silver - $ 107.00

Additionally I have also included system cooling as follows:

Cooler Master Hyper 212X, with 120mm PWM Fan - $ 39.00
Corsair AF120 Performance, 120mm, Black with No LED, Twin Pack - $ 34.00

This brings the total to approximately $ 511 at current exchange rates.

I see all RAM for AMD boards are available up to a maximum of 2133 Mhz so I got the cheapest one I could get that was available. The Corsair RAM is also two 8Gb chips as I read that AMD benefits from more bandwidth.

Also I am not sure if the extra cooling is that necessary, but I don't want to take any chances ;)

Any advice would be much appreciated as I would like to be sure before investing my money.

Thanks,
Gerhard

  1. For about the same money you can go for i5-6xx0K + Z170 + 16GB DDR 2400MHz.
It will provide much more performance for your gaming and streaming.
  2. Hi n0ns3ns3, thank you for the reply,

I did a bit of looking around and found this Intel option for more or less the same, would you say it is better?

    Intel Skylake Core i5-6600K, 3.50GHz, Quad Core, LGA1151 - $282
    MSI Z170A PC MATE, LGA1151, Intel Z170 Chipset, ATX - $ 150
    Corsair Vengeance LPX, 16GB, DDR4-2400, CL14, Black - $ 95
    Cooler Master Hyper 212X, with 120mm PWM Fan - $ 39

It is a bit more at $ 566

That's excellent option. This setup will serve you many years.
You can put any video card later and this setup will not slow down it.
Though for 150$ i'd go for asus MB. Something like Z170-A or Z170-gaming. but that's a personal preference.
