Big FPS boost after cold reboot in Doom, How can I get the same performance without a cold reboot?

Performance in doom is about +20 fps higher after cold reboot. (from 50-70 fps to 70-90) What could be causing this and how can I keep this performance without rebooting?

Obvious possibilities include background tasks/malicious software or thermal throttling. You could use something like GPU-Z to log whats going on with your 970, if it is throttling back on the GPU after a period of time then you should look at improving cooling in your case.

You mention Doom specifically so I assume you've only noticed it with this game, which opens the other possibility that it's just badly written and gradually hogs your system resources in some way. I've been playing Doom a lot recently and have found it to be massively more unstable than any other game I own.
