Screen goes black, then computer restarts only minutes into playing games

I built my own computer a little over a year ago. It works just fine- no problems. My friend wanted to build a computer so I helped him build one. We went to logical increments and he picked everything on the first level of "Great".

The computer works just fine, the only problem is when we actually try and play games in the first few minutes. We tried to play Dota 2 and H1Z1. Both look and play just fine, except within the first few minutes of playing, the computer will go to a blackscreen and then restart the computer on us for some reason.

This only happens when we try and play games. We built the computer less than a week ago. Everything is plugged in properly. We unplugged everything and replugged everything back in to be sure. We replaced the stock hsu with the hyper 212, used thermal paste and it is much quieter and nicer, yet no improvement. All the fans are working properly, the GPU fans turn on when the temperature hits 60C as intended, then the temperature goes back down. None of the parts are overheating. We updated all our drivers, then we tried to uninstall some of the nvidia drivers and reinstall "a stable version".

We're at our wits end here and are suspecting perhaps we got a faulty part. The only thing I can think of is since the computer works perfectly fine while not playing games, that the culprit is likely a bad PSU or GPU.

What is the standard procedure at this point? Is there a way to tell which part specifically is bad or do I send them both back?

Could it be something else?

  1. I had this same issue for a very long time. Turning off Turbo Mode and CPU C States in the CPU setting of the BIOS worked for me. I have an ASUS motherboard so I don't exactly know where those settings would be on your motherboard, but you should be able to easily find that in the manual.
  2. Okay we'll try that when he gets off work and I'll get back to you in several hours.

    We found a solution.

He had 1 stick of 8gb ram. Idk if it was faulty or if he needed 2 sticks of ram, but we replaced his ram with mine.

I had 4 sticks of 2gb of ram. When we put my ram into his computer, everything worked properly, no crash, no restart.
