Not sure what network component to replace, help?

Hi,

I'm not sure what part of my networking components to replace, my ethernet port works but my wifi doesnt.

Do I need to replace the whole network card or just the chip? Or something else regarding the networking.

I have a dell inspiron 7520 and my network adapters found in my device manager are:

Intel Centrino Wireless N 2230
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

If there is anything else I'm missing out on that's obvious, not 100% about this so any help will be grateful

Regards

  1. Without first knowing what the problem is with your wifi, it's almost impossible to help you. The problem could be either software or hardware.
You have a laptop, so the network "card" is a part of your motherboard. You could replace the wifi chip, but that's not usually necessary. You might try using a basic usb wifi dongle to see if that works.
  2. Does your device have an exclamation point/triangle over it in device manager? This would indicate a missing or possibly bad driver.

Is the option to connect to WiFi Available? Or is there a box with a red X in the lower right corner of the desktop where the WiFi Icon would be?

As stated above, WiFi cards in laptops dont go bad too often, so i dont think you'll have to replace the card but more info would help.
  3. Could be something as simple as the wifi is switched off. Some laptops have physical switches to do this. Make sure yours is still on. I've had card go bad, they aren't difficult to replace.
  4. Thanks for the reply guys, maybe my reply here can help.

    Answers to questions asked:

"Does your device have an exclamation point/triangle over it in device manager?" No it does not, there are no error symbols and ive updated the network drivers and also BIOS driver

"Is the option to connect to WiFi Available? Or is there a box with a red X in the lower right corner of the desktop where the WiFi Icon would be?" Yes there is a red cross beside the wifi symbol

"Could be something as simple as the wifi is switched off" I'm toggling between on and off and no difference is being made

Extra: On boot, twice since this has happened ive had the option to connect to my regular wifi, but almost instantly the option goes away and the red cross appears beside the wifi symbol

    Update*
I'm on windows 10 and when I try to turn on the wifi it just keeps resetting to "Wifi Off"
