Will a GDDR3 Graphics Card work on a GDDR5 Slot on a Motherboard??

My cousin has a PNY GTX610 that is GDDR3 and he got a new motherboard that only supports GDDR5 Graphics card. The motherboard is a MSI 970 Gaming for his new build. Should he use it with the motherboard or should he not??

  1. That video card is compatible with the motherboard that you have, i dont know where you got that idea that VRAM has something to do with compatibility.

    PNY GTX610

That is a PCIe slot. It may be x16, x8 or x4. They are not GDDR5 or 3 slots. The version of the slot may be PCIe 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 or higher. That is a PCIe 2.0 card. Most likely if he bought a very recent board it is a PCIe 3.0 slot which is backwards compatible.

Long story short? Yes, that card will work.

The manufacturer suggests a 350W PSU.

EDIT. They are PCIe 2.0 slots. Perfectly compatible.
