New here need help upgrading my system
Hey guys I have a question i have a regular 500GB HDD that I have had since early 2010 and it still works today, I am wondering should I upgrade to an ssd or just stick with my HDD also do you guys use an ssd in your computers? I look forward to hearing from you guys thanks.
SSD's are so much faster and it will be a noticeable boost to performance. I am currently using an SSD and I can't imagine life without it. They will make your computer feel much more snappy and better in every aspect.
However word of caution that SSD's are more expensive per GB than an HDD (its dropping rapidly though). Although the performance is really good, it depends on whether you need lots of space on your computer or if you need the speed because for the same price of a 256GB SSD, you could get a 2TB HDD.
I'd recommend you get an SSD but keep in mind the above just in case you use need lots of space.
Hi there Gabe_G,
Keep in mind that the drive's speed affects boot/loading times the most, not the overall system performance.
Apart from that, SSDs are considerably faster than mechanical drives. Also, they tend to be more reliable.
Do you have a desktop machine? In case you do, you can consider getting a small SSD for OS and the programs you use the most. You can just keep your HDD for storing all the other data.
Given the fact that the HDD is 6 years old, it may be a good idea to check its health status out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Look for pending/reallocated and uncorrectable sectors.
hey guys thanks for your help, also is there a way I can setup notifications so that when you guys reply to any of my forum posts I will be notified? I look forward to hearing from you guys thanks. I also have a 1TB Toshiba external drive that I use for backing up all my data even a system image so what else can I use the HDD drive for?
