Scandisk can't complete --- Read error rate

Hi!

Can someone help me with this.
Scandisk on one of my hard drives can not complete. Crystal disk shows read error rate I will attach a screenshot.]http://postimg.org/image/i53phk5pn/
The interesting thing is that the Current pending sector count is reduced?
I am constantly getting warnings to backup my drive. Does this mean my hard drive is finished or formatting might help?
Few days prior to this I encrypted some of my files, but than decrypted them. After decryption accessing took for hours. Could this be the problem?

Thank you for your answers means a lot since I have important data on the drive and it is a lot of work to backup everything set up a new system etc...

  1. Hi there McClick,

My suggestion would be to back up the data stored on the drive as soon as possible as it could fail at any time.
The read error rate could indicate some mechanical flaw. I doubt that reformatting the drive will help.

One simple thing you can try is to just attach the drive with different cables to a different SATA port. You can re-test after that.
Another thing you can consider is to clone the drive onto another one(new one). Though, keep in mind that it is always a better idea to perform a clean install.

Let me know in case you have some more questions,

    Hi there,

Thank you very much for your answer. I backed up my data the very moment this happened. But I am now trying to do something to repair my disk since it just a little over one year old, it shouldn't be broken this early on. I will try and use maybe sniprite or hddguru. Read about it, do you have any experience with it? I will also try with sata cables like you said.

Well, as the drive is most probably under warranty, you can just contact the place you got it from RMA it.
In case there is something mechanically wrong with the drive( things like arm, writing head, etc. that are causing these read errors), I'm afraid that software tools will not help. It will not hurt to try though.
