Awfully Slow Program Startup on HDD

Hello everybody,
As the title suggests, my Western Digital HDD is really slow when opening a particular program (Brackets). The read speeds are about 0-100 KILOBYTES/sec, the write speeds abnormally high at 2-4 MB/sec (I'm just opening a program, so I don't know why this is so high), the access time is a few HUNDRED milliseconds and there are huge spikes between inactive and active periods. I've already updated and reinstalled Brackets twice, but this doesn't solve anything. I have also checked my hard drive for errors (there weren't any) and defragged, but these weren't helpful either.

Other info:
1 month new computer.
Originally 1TB capacity - I short stroked it to about 500Gb.
Only 150Gb of space used up.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  3. Hi there CH3791,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
It may be a good idea to back up the most important data stored on it until you sort this out.

After that, you can try something simple as just attaching the drive with different cables(both SATA and power ones) to a different port. Sometimes, faulty cables could cause similar issues.
In case the issue persists, you can observe Resource Monitor and see if there is high disk usage and what is causing it. What is your OS?

What do you mean by error checking? You can test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool(both short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=gBSxpS

Let me know how this goes,

  4. Hello WD Rep,

I have downloaded the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool. However, it says to close all programs on the C drive before testing. Because I have a laptop, I don't know how to do this. As for your questions, I am running Windows 10. And yes, the disk usage shoots up to 100% everytime I try to open Brackets. By Error checking I mean selecting my hard drive on Disk Management, going into tools and clicking 'Error checking'.

What is your OS? Do you get high disk usage when you are not trying to open Brackets?

Well, I guess you can test the drive with some third party tool as well: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
It would be nice if you provide a screenshot of the SMART report.
