  1. does you motherboard take ddr3 ram? if not you will need a new motherboard
  2. They are keyed differently and will not fit.
  3. Best answer
No. DDR2 and DDR3 are keyed differently to prevent people from trying it. Some old LGA 775 boards from when Core2 was on the way out ( ~2008ish ) had slots for both but they were rare.
  4. unless you have a motherboard that has slots for ddr2 and ddr3 ram. no their is no chance to do it without changing motherboards.
  5. I forgot to write that my motherboard does have slots for DDR3
  6. then yes you can use ddr3 in them

    What exact motherboard is it?
  8. Asus Z77-V LX
  9. You won't see any performance benefits. That almost has to be an LGA 775 motherboard and it and the CPUs that fit them were not able to use the extra bandwidth of DDR3. You also can't run DDR2 and DDR3 at the same time.

If you do have one of those old boards make sure you check the QVL list and specs closely before just buying DDR3. It most likely requires very old DDR3 that uses voltages that would damage modern systems and you may have to hunt some down on ebay or the like since it was only used for a short time.

Does not have or support DDR2. Not sure why you think that. That motherboard is 10 years too new to support DDR2

    QVL found here.

    This motherboard? https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P8Z77V_LX/specifications/
The specs say DDR3. Nothing about DDR2.
    "4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 MHz Memory"
  12. Intel dropped DDR2 support with Core2/LGA 775. 2007- 2008 was the last time you could buy Intel with native DDR2 support.
  13. Oooh,my bad. I was thinking about DDR4, got it mixed up. So going from DDR3 to 4 is not possible with this motherboard? IT only supports DDR3?

Correct. Just as with DDR2 -> DDR3 does not work, DDR3 -> DDR4 does not work.
