A month ago a friend built a new PC from some salvaged components (Motherboard, CPU, GPU) from his Alienware X51 R1. Just a few hours ago, 'Matrix style GPU Artifacts' started to appear on any dark display his DVI monitor showed.
I'd like to think it's either his GPU or DVI cable, but can anyone provide some insight to this problem? Is it common? General causes and solution?

There's a really easy way to test this, get another cable (Display Port, HDMI, DVI, e.t.c) that your monitor can utilise and see if the artifact's continue.
Artifacts are usually caused by overheating VRAM or a failing card.
