Trying to overclock amd fx-6300 on msi 970 gaming motherboard and I'm running into some issues.

So I bought the corsair h100i watercooling system so I could overclock my processor. My full rig is:
MSI 970 gaming mobo
AMD fx-6300 @3.5GHz
650w EVGA G1 PSU
AMD R9 280 3gb
Corsair h100i water cooler

The problem I ran into was setting the voltage, I had my brother helping because he's overclocked before, but the MSI/AMD settings are new to him.

The default voltage in the bios said 1.024v and I clocked the processor to 4.5GHz with an intended voltage of 1.3v. When I booted it up, I checked HWMonitor to watch the temp before any stress testing. HWMonitor showed that the cpu heated up, but it was constantly fluctuating, and the voltage was measured at 1.57v. At this point, we shut the computer off, and the bios said the cpu temp was 38c and the voltage was above 1.5v.

We adjusted the cpu voltage again, and my bios changes voltages in increments of ±.1 or .11 etc. The bios has you alter the change in voltage rather than the actual value of the voltage. We think that each time you select a voltage change, it applies it without updating value displayed in the bios.

When we subtracted .3v, we assumed it would change the value to 1.2v but the computer wouldn't boot after that. We changed our minds several times and think that each time we changed the voltage it subtracted it consecutively. We reset the cmos and decided to do more research before attempting any more overclocking.

Does anyone have experience with this motherboard, or know why the voltage is going to these random amounts?

  1. So you did great by letting it sit without the cmos for a bit so everything goes back to normal. the big problem is that the Fx 6300 is a terrible overclocker. Usually with the 6300 you can get to 4ghz by just changing multiplier and not the voltage. try and forcing 1.3 in the bios. a lot of ocing settings for amd give a recommended voltage and change to it, itself. although the 6300 gets really warm at those clocks and voltages. try forcing the voltage to fixed 1.3 and leaving it. there's a lot of boost options involved with AMD. so take another look deep into the bios. There is almost always whats known as an adaptive voltage, try looking for a fixed option. I try not to mess with amd for overclocking as it's a lot more of a pain. A lot of 6300 users cant get a stable 4.2ghz so keep that in mind, GL!
  2. Fx6300 a terrible overclocker? Ummm..say what? Entire fx series has been made with a thought in a mind of overclocking. Its even written on the cpu's box when u buy it. :D 4.2ghz for fx6300 is nothing, try 4.8.. thats something to hassle with. I have my fx6300 at 4.5ghz, and could go higher if i had better cooling.

    Sorry..i couldnt resist putting that out there.. but about the problem, i cant help much, cause i have never used msi board before, i can just say that i need 1.431v for stable 4.5ghz, maybe that will help you a little bit. Im using gigabytes g970a-ud3p board by the way. :) Hope this helps in any way.
  3. If you see the frequency fluctuating, turn off apm, cool n' quiet, and all c-states in the bios.
  4. If the voltage is getting too high, you might want to lower your load line calibration setting.
  5. Did you by chance set your vcore loadline? There should be settings like normal, medium, extreme, and standard. That can also raise your voltage. What i usually do is disable APM, cn'c, c'states and all that such, then set my loadline to extreme, reboot get my base voltage from CPU-z then start OC'ing my processor. Once it hits a wall is when i start upping the voltage by .125 or .250 (don't follow the .250 im just impatient and don't care about loosing money)
  6. Turn off all boost settings and such.
  7. Terrible oveclocker ? My foot !! My 6350 (just higher binned 6300) is at 4730 MHz under air cooler, 1.325v, fully stable 24/7. You just have to talk softly to it.
