Change to AHCI setting for my new SSD, but what happens when I reconnect my HHD?

So I know I need to select AHCI in bios just before I disconnect my old HHD and install my new SSD, but what happens later when I reconnect my HHD? Will the AHCI setting cause problems for the HHD?

  1. Nothing will happen your hdd will be fine!
  2. If your boot drive was originally set to IDE instead of AHCI, you will need to update the windows registry before setting the bios to AHCI otherwise the computer won't boot into windows. Other than that, all will work normally

He should do a clean install on his ssd
  4. This is true if he's wanting his OS on the SSD. I assumed he would be using it for secondary storage. So, I guess the OP needs to be a little more specific in his question.

Dave, if you are going to install the OS fresh onto the SSD, then bjsm is correct. If you will be using the the SSD as secondary storage, the link I provided you will be useful.
  5. Don't take this the wrong way, a ssd is meant for speed i don't think someone would install a ssd only for storage especially at the price they go for. But yeah Dave, you are good to go after changing your bios to ahci. Good luck!

No worries. I know it seems odd to use an SSD as secondary storage, but I've seen stranger stuff come across these forums. It's sometimes better to provide too much information than not enough.
  7. Thanks for the replies guys, I will be using the SSD for OS and programs, and the HDD for storage.
