Problems Optimising Arkham Knight

Hey guys,

So, Arkham Knight's finally dropped and I've got a few hours playing it under my belt. However, I'm having a few issues optimising the graphics settings for my rig. My hardware is -

i5-4460
Galax GeForce GTX 970 (overclocked)
8G RAM
7200RPM HD

Basically, even when I turn the Shadows and Detail Level down to Normal and turn all of the Nvidia Gameworks stuff off, I'm getting a the occasional stuttering, frame tearing and marginal dips in FPS. I know my rig's not the best of the best (and the new recommended specs for Arkham Knight start with an i7 I believe?) but I thought I'd be able to run it at least on medium settings with no drop below 60FPS. Is anyone else was having this problem?

It's a bit weird because my hardware monitor isn't picking up on any unnecessary duress on my hardware. My memory load isn't maxing out, my GPU isn't reaching it's temp/power throttle, nothing's getting to the point of overheating. I'm getting occasional spikes where my CPU is maxing it's usage across all 4 cores, but not the CPU usage isn't consistently high. What do you guys think is causing this? Could it be CPU bottleneck? Or just poor first-day-driver-optimisation?

I know this game just came out so it might be a little early for this. Just thought I'd test the waters, see what you all thought, and see if anyone else was having similiar problems. Cheers guys. :)

Solution

an i7 in not needed, the other half recommended cpu is the fx 8350, and the i5 is in gaming at least on par with it, so stay with the i5.

well, let me explain the issue with arkam night,
IT RUNS LIKE GARBAGE ON EVERYRTHING
the game needs to be fixed before it is playable, it even has a 30fps framelock, the new drivers from both companies are out, and most times a nvidia title runs good on nvidia, this one...

Can you check how much GDDR5 your GPU is using? Download Rivatuner or ATI Afterburner to monitor and report back.

Run the program, launch the game and play for 10 minutes and report back on the findings.

Cheers

Wow, you picked it in 1. I used MSI Afterburner (I assume you meant MSI not ATI? I couldn't find an ATI Afterburner program, and assumed that's what you meant o.o) to clock the GPU memory usage for 10 mins. With Detail Level and Shadows on Normal, and all the Gameworks stuff turned off, it used 3600MB of GDDR5 memory! Which, as we know, is about where the 970's limit is, and right where my stuttering kicked in!

I am absolutely SHOCKED. How can they say this game is optimised when a 3500MB GPU can't reasonably support it on medium settings?? Really disappointing, Rocksteady. Hope they patch this with better optimisation reaaaaal soon. :(

Apologies I did mean MSI Afterburner haha.

It's a real shame what they did to the 970. Shocking infact!

Perhaps you could maybe sell it and buy a 980? But I would invest in an i7 before that pal.

I have Batman, but I intend to play tonight after work, I am so excited haha.

Steam: Wardis (topless pic) lol
Happy gaming.

Wow is this for real?

I haven't gotten around to test the game yet, but it's very surprising that it uses 2000 more VRAM than The Witcher 3...
I'm gonna try this out myself as soon as I get a hold of the game!

i hope you understand this and of course refund it because noone should buy a game like this, buying it is promoting release issues like this.
heck, everyone should refund it, buy a proper running game.

For me, the weirdest thing about this game is that you can run a 'test your pc' within the game itself and the results suggested I was good to go. The av fps was about 59-60 with lowest at around 46 and current frequently above 60 fps. How little did I know... Massive screen tear with V-sync enabled and without (but with adaptive on). First nme character I had to interact with went through a wall which I almost coudn't reach. Hope they'll patch this mess soon...

Yes, all the complaints other people are having with Arkham Knight optimisation are starting to flood the net. Fortunately, this isn't a problem with my CPU or GPU, it's purely Rocksteady's fault. I will say that it is playable on medium settings with my rig, even with the minor stutter I'm getting. I've made it up to the first main boss without any major problems in gameplay. That said, it might be a good idea to wait for a patch or two. I really want to be able to play with the Gameworks interactive smoke, it looks so freaking pretty. O.O

Not quite as bad as Unity, perhaps, but still a bit of a disappointment. Rocksteady, optimise this bizniss yo.

Cheers for the help working this out guys.

I had the same thing happen with the in game benchmark, but I've got to say, the 'Test Your PC' option seemed soooo tame. I didn't feel like it put my comp through it's paces at all, there were maybe 8 bad guys in the whole test? Not really much comparison to the actual game, where you're fighting upwards of 20 dudes in one room at some points.

How the F**k is his answer a solution to your problem? haha absolutely bull shit. His pretty much debated a war between intel and AMD in a small sentence and that's a solution to your question?

Not only have you selected an "INCORRECT" answer, you are misleading others viewing this thread for similar issues.

Wow, take it down a notch there, brother. I'm not sure what you're talking about, or if you read his post correctly. He didn't debate a war between AMD and Intel, he said it runs crap on both processors, and according to the vast number of other sites and forums I've visited in between looking here he's absolutely right. Steam, Amazon and Reddit have all been flooded with users angry with the game's optimisation. 70% of players are getting stuttering, except for excpetionally high-end rigs. The game itself has a built in 30FPS cap, which when unlocked causes more problems.

He's absolutely right that the problem is the optimisation, and not the hardware, and that's why he gets the answer.

Your solution was that I should upgrade my hardware. This does not appear to be the right suggestion based on the information I have. I'm sorry dude, no need to take it personally. It's the game, not the hardware.

Dude chill, if you bothered to read his post he did actually post a reason, the correct reason.

You'll be able to play it, it just won't run very well until they patch it. Give it a week or two (he said hopefully) and it should be up to scratch.

Disregard my previous post. I played yesterday for about 3 hours, no problems. No stuttering, lagging, weird shapes or whatever.

There's a few tweaks you can do in the ini file other than unlock the FPS cap, like disable blur, use Dx10 vs Dx11, lower Shadow Map res, etc. Some have said it makes no difference, others have said it helps. It probably depends what settings you're using.

Plus some claim disabling blur crashes the game, but I've read you need to do it by leaving blur skinning on (1), and only setting motion blur and blur pause to False.

Also, do note that Rocksteady are aware of the problem, and have said they are trying to fix it ASAP. One thing they are focused on heavily short term is streaming efficiency, and to that they've added that installing the game on an SSD can help meantime.

They have also acknowledged that AMD performance is worse than Nvidia, and are working on that with AMD.

Do know that I am by no means excusing any of this, as Rosksteady gave the PC porting job to Iron Galaxy, a small 12 man team, and only gave them 2 months to port it.
