guys plz help me on choosing ram for my old mobo ......!!!very confused

i have one ram of 512mb Infineon DDR SDRAM Modules - 512MB (64Mx64) PC2100

http://www.electrobyt.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=900#.VP8v16PWKhoand
my problem is want to add another 1gb stick of some different and use use 512mb+1gb =1.5gb ram
but i have buyed one 1gb ram it does not work together with my old 512mb ram....what to do

my mother board says ...
The memory controller supports DDR memory DIMM frequen-
cies of 400/333/266 MHz. It supports two DDR SDRAM up to maximum memory of 2 GB.
DDR Maximum memory bandwidth of 3.2 GB/s in single-channel mode (DDR400) and 6.4
GB/s in dual-channel mode (DDR400) are supported. One AGP Ultra slot is used to installed
an AGP graphics card that emulates the AGP function.

• Supports DDR 400/333/266 DDR SDRAM with dual-channel mode
• Accommodates two unbuffered DIMMs
• Up to 1 GB per DIMM with maximum memory size up to 2 GB
*This motherboard accommodates two 184-pin unbuffered Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM
*(Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) memory modules, and supports up to
*DDR 400/333/266. Each module can be installed with 1 GB of memory, the total maximum
*memory size is 2 GB

now comes to my 1gb ram which i have now is TRANSCEND 1G DDR400 DIMM 3-3-3

More about guys plz choosing ram mobo confused
  1. you mismatch ram and you hope they will work one is cl 2 at 2.5 volts the other is cl 3 at 2.6 volts give the name and model of your motherboard it will easier to help you .
  2. Does the 1GB stick work if the 512GB stick is not in? Here is a matched set of 2 x 1GB CL3 2.5V sticks from a good company really cheap, they should fix you right up. Just send back the new 1GB stick and toss the 512GB.

As scout said, your memory is mismatched...
    512MB PC2100 DDR266 2.5V CL2
    1GB PC3200 DDR400 2.6V CL3

The price for DDR266 is more than DDR400, perhaps because it is not used much, little demand maybe? Getting a matched set is the easiest way to go.

endeavour thanks for your reply ....
yes...only 1GB STICK WORKING ALONE and also only 512mb stick also working alone but the problem is they both are not working together ,when they both are inside, first my computer is not starting but if it starts then it getting freezes after five to ten minutes ,i know some thing is mismatched ,and i have already buyed 1GB ram, so i can just exchange to shopkeeper ....can you please tell me when i exchange my 1GB stick what factors of 512MB ram should match with 1GB ram ...
one more last question which of my STICK is faster 1GB or 512mb ....from my minimal knowledge ,i think 1GB STICK faster as it is ddr400 , iam i correct ???
    my mobo is mercury PI865D7

I will try, as everyone has said, your sticks are mismatched, as you realize now. They work alone perhaps because your MB reads the JEDEC profile off the stick and sets the MC in the PCH to run it, but together 1 of the sticks is out of spec. That is why it boots sometimes and runs for a few minutes then crashes. You could do a couple things here.

    1. Exchange the 1Gb stick for: 1GB, DDR266, PC2100, 184-pin, CL2, 2.5V
This will match your 512GB stick and should work fine (but not guaranteed). This is a slower stick, the one you have is DDR400 (faster DRAM). Keep this in mind, with a 1GB in 1 slot and a 512MB in the other, your MC will use the 512MB and 1/2 of the 1GB sticks in duel channel mode, the remaining 1/2 of the 1GB stick will run in single channel mode.
You will see a performance jump of maybe 40% for the first GB of RAM because it is duel channel, then the same speed you have now for the remaining 512GB. (I don't know what you paid for your new 1GB stick)

    2. Return the 1GB stick and get your money back. Order this from Ne or something like it from someplace else.

You will have a matched set guaranteed to run at the labeled timing, a full 2GB that all runs in duel mode with a 40% performance jump. If you exchange the 1Gb stick and the new one does not work for some reason you have wasted a lot of time and effort, this option may save you some headache.

I worked out the timing below for you. You will gain a little with DDR400 over the DDR266, most of your gain will be going to duel mode. And a lot just because you will cut down on disk I/O with more memory to work with.

Type Data rate Bit time Command Cycle CAS 1st 4th 8th
    DDR-400 400 MT/s 2.5 ns 200 MHz 5 ns 3 15 ns 22.5 ns 32.5 ns

    DDR-266 266 MT/s 3.75ns 133 MHz 7.5 ns 2 15 ns 26.25 ns 41.25 ns

Hope this answers your questions and gets you fixed up, have fun :)
