How to get Win 8.1 to utilize more of my RAM to improve performance

I have a new Laptop (4th gen I-3, 4 GB Ram, Win 8.1). The RAM sat steady at about 60%, / 2.4 - 2.5 GB used - but the Disk would regularly peg and hold at or near 100%, with the performance awful and frequent hangs.

I Guessed that the system was likely doing a lot of paging, so I bought an 8 GB memory stick to increase RAM, with the hopes of reducing Disk paging. But even when running Adobe Lightroom, which is a heavy RAM user, my RAM usage stays where it was (2.4 - 2.5 GB; Now 30%).

Do I need to do something to get the system to take advantage of the added RAM, or is there something else going on here. Was increasing RAM a waste of Money here?

  1. I really haven't heard of this problem before, but you might wanna try allowing Adobe LightRoom to use all of your RAM.
I found something on the internet, it's for windows 7, but it should help you if it's the same problem: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/66482-memory-set-maximum-amount-used-windows.html
  2. If you're running the 32-bit version of Lightroom that memory usage is about right. 32-bit apps can not address more than 4GB.
