Is this PSU (XFX TS 550W 80+ Gold Certified ATX) compatible with this GPU (GIGABYTE GeForce GTX970 Windforce OC, 4GB)

I can't quite understand if the PSU has adequate connectors.
The GPU power requirements:
550W(with one 6-pin and one 8-pin external power connectors)

The PSU connectors :
1 x power 24 pin ATX with detachable 4 pin section ¦ 1 x power 8 pin EPS12V with detachable 4 pin ATX12V section ¦ 2 x 8 pin PCI Express power with detachable 2 pin section ¦ 1 x 4 PIN mini-power connector ¦ 4 x 4 PIN internal power ¦ 1 x power 8 pin EPS12V ¦ 8 x 15 pin Serial ATA power

So the GPU needs a 6-pin and 8-pin. The PSU has three 8 pin connectors but no 6-pin connectors. Does that mean this is not compatible? also what is the difference between the 8-pin PCI Express and EPS12V connectors. Also Does the EPS12v with a detachable 4-pin ATX12v have any significance?

  1. Usually one of the 8 pins can convert to a 6.
  2. your post says it right in it!! "2 x 8 pin PCI Express power with detachable 2 pin section" the detachable 2 pin section means the 8 pins is actually 6 pins + 2 pins that can be used in either configuration you need. the psu is plenty of power and has the right connectors so your good to go and should enjoy your new card's gaming skills :)

The EPSI connector are for the motherboard to supply power to the cpu. The 8 pin ones can be slid apart to make 4 pin ones. Some motherboards need a 8 pin others a 4 pin. PCI express connector supply power to GPU. The 8 pin can be slid apart to create a 6 pin connector. The GPU determines what connectors it needs base on power needs. The 6 pin can supply up to 75w and 8 pin up to 150w. The two types of connector have different plugs so they can not be misused.
  4. That explains a lot, Thanks for the quick response.
    Just for clarification though,
GPU power requirement : 550W(with one 6-pin and one 8-pin external power connectors)
Does the "one 6-pin and one 8-pin external power connectors" mean one of each?
Does it mean I can connect either 75W or a 150W ? Is it possible to connect both at once?

  5. yes it means one of each. so the card is drawing a max of 225 watts (75 watt 6 pin and 150 watt 8 pin) from the connectors and another 75 watts max from the mobo itself. this gives the cars 300 watts total power to work with if i needs it.
  6. Ah I see I see, it all makes sense now thanks MathGeek
