Want to install ubuntu on a Toshiba Chromebook 2 without using crouton--possible?

I want to get a Toshiba Chromebook 2 and use Ubuntu as the sole operating system, just wipe the Chrome OS and use only linux. All the installation guides I've found are only for using crouton to install ubuntu on top of Chrome. Will it work if I just install ubuntu 14.04 from a USB and overwrite the Chrome installation?

  1. The things with ChromeOS (which ChromeBook is running) are not as simple. There is no BIOS in the way you know it.

Check here to see whether your ChromeBooks is supported. It worked quite well for my Acer C710.
  2. Yes it is possible you just red to enable developer mode or flash new core boot firmware. Read the arch wiki

Also be sure to use kernel 3.17+ for any chrome book

Thanks for the tip. I looked into this and it turns out the Toshiba CB2 does not have Seabios so it would be very difficult to install Arch Linux this way. I guess I could try the firmware flash method but then I risk bricking the computer and not being able to return it. I guess I'll wait for more new Chromebook releases, this is the first one with a decent screen that I would consider buying, but it looks too risky to buy and try a linux Install.

These things are pretty hard to 'brick'

just remove the wrire screw then run the script that flashes a new rom. Very easy.

in case of a bad firmware flash, which I my self have done, it is easy to flash a new firmware directly to the bios chip via a raspberrypi or buspirate or any other device that supports SPI.
