Is there any way i could give an application priority over another in terms of bandwidth? Right now i am downloading a game on Steam and it's taking 100% of the speed and i can't even open anything on chrome without pausing the download, i don't wanna use the steam limit download settings because it's not flexible and i have to pick one of the options in the list which for me are going to be either too slow or full speed. Usually programs like Origin slow down when u try to browse or play a game online and gives priority to the other application over the download making the internet usable while downloading.

Is there anything i can do to give steam lower priority? just if you're wondering i have a D-Link 2730U router.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Steam in general is very bad compiled when coming to downloading and updating games.
My computers totally lags down everytime i try to update or install something from steam for some reason, not only the connection but the computer aswell.

I suggest you go with the built in one if you want it to be easy.

Otherwise you the try the QoS (quality of service) wich i personally have never used.
You can read about it here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.02.cableguy.aspx

Good luck :)

Really only the sender can control the rate it sends. You to a point can influence this by causing errors. Pretty much TCP will keep trying to increase its transmission rate until it sees errors or it hit a maximum rate due to latency. Some router have the ability to drop data you have already received from the server. This makes your PC think there is data loss and it will tell the sender about the loss. This eventually will cause the sender to slow down....for a small while at least. This is normally done with QoS on the router. Your router has a extremely basic form of QoS that only classifies packets and like most routers it can only do this on outbound traffic and your problem is inbound.

There are PC software programs used to limit traffic by application and many other categories. This of course does not work when you have multiple devices since they don't know what other devices are doing, in those cases you must control it on the router.

I normally do this on a routers so I will defer to others more knowledgeable than me on PC software packages. I would assume QoS software for a PC would be a start to look at. It should work similar to the method the router does but it should have much better control over the messages it is send in response to the data received from the remote location.

I tried NetLimiter but only limits the download speed, much better customization than steam but still i'd love something that give priorities so for example if i am loading on chrome that would slow down steam because Chrome has the higher priority in terms of bandwidth. Are there any good 3rd party programs that can do that? preferably free but if it's paid and it will do the exact thing i don't mind.
