Need help with "Disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" error

I'm getting "the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" error on my 3TB USB 3.0 WD My Book Essential external HD. I have 2 of them and now the one won't work anymore. I started seeing this error right around the time I did a fresh install of Win 8.1 on a new internal drive. But if I put the bad ext drive on a cable to my Win 7 desktop, I have the same problem ("the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."). Help please.

  1. You probably need to get some recovery software and take a try at recovering what's on the drive. Do you need what's on the drive? If not, you could just reinitialize, partition, and format it. If you need the data that's on it, I'll post a link to two threads on recovery software (can't post it now; don't have my links where I am).

Although I personally never trust a drive that has failed once.

  2. Use "Recuva", it works like a charm.
