graphic card capability with a dell optiplex 755 sff (small form factor)

i have a buddy who has a dell optiplex 755 sff and he wants to put a video card in it. it is pci express 2.0 capable but the space between the pci express slot and the hard drive is very small. we were looking at a Nvidia Galaxy GeForce GT 610 video card. it says that it is low profile so does anyone know if it will work?

  1. well, for me personally, if its a gt610 (or something similar), then i would not bother buying. 610 is like the slowest of the bunch. it's not even worth it.
i would suggest he get's another case, a bigger one, then save up for a decent gpu, a 650Ti is a good starting point, or an x50 (depending on the generation) or an amd equivalent.
also, since that is a branded pc, i am guessing that the psu on it sucks big time. maybe a 300w psu. you guys would need to upgrade that if you are looking to upgrade to a decent setup.

but of course, if this is not for gaming, then just forget about everything i said :)
  2. ive known that the 610 isnt that great of a card. the case he has is very proprietary in regards to the psu. its going nowhere. and yes the wattage is 275 so we cant get a high end card for this system. he originally got the 620 because his budget in cards was relatively low but the heatsink was too large to fit due to the hard drive being so close to the pci express slot. ive done a little research on the 610 and ive compared with an older card i used to have (geforce 8400 gs) and the 610 performs a tad bit better. i used to be able to play starcraft 2 and diablo 3 on the 8400 gs so i thought the 610 would let him do the same. hes going to get the card tomorrow and we're both hoping it will fit. honestly he doesnt care about the best right now he just wants something in there to play simple games like starcraft 2 and his favorite, star trek online. anyways thank you for the help :)

    Where do you located, USA?

The best card to fit there is Sapphire HD7750 low profile, unfortunately those cards are out of production and very difficult to find in USA.
  4. i would get a better case, also for future upgrades. as long as he has that (and that psu), things will be very limited

Would you able to find a good BTX case today? Please google prior to advising!

finding the 7750 in stores is hard and for reasons unknown my friend doesnt want to get one online as of now. that and his budget again is relatively low so thats why he was going for the 610 and it does say that that card is low profile so hopefully that will work out for him.
  7. Did it work? I am in a similar situation.
  8. sorry for the late reply. it did work, just barely though (the GeForce GT 610). its very low power and low profile so it worked very well with his OEM power supply. he is able to play games like Fallout: New Vegas, Starcraft 2, and some others at medium detail. resolution on those games may have varied though.
  9. I would recommend the asus R7 240.....i just got this for my lenovo sff thinkcentre, and its awesome. Only $55 at microcenter. Plays everygame i tried so far. Cod, bff, wow, not on ultra settings , but will play nice on mid to mid high settings.

It's been a year since this post, so I'm sure you've figured it out by now. lol. But for those that might be searching for the same and you happen to find yourself here. I have the same computer. I just had the graphic card upgraded yesterday without changing anything and with great results. It was upgraded to a Nvidia Geforce

Works great, and if you so happen to be looking for a way to fix the sims 3 pets from looking deformed, this will work. I paid 55$ canadian for the card.

He ended up getting the GT 610 because it was the best low profile card in his budget. The 7750 low profile was nowhere to be found. It works well for what he uses the computer for (Star Trek Online). Anything above the 610 wouldn't work because the heatsink was too big. However, today he could get away with buying a GT 730 128-bit card no problem. This would be my recommendation for small form factor PC's today.
  13. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N802PC0/ref=psdc_284822_t3_B00KYCTCZ8 Here's a 730 i was looking at but i'm not sure it would fit. If only dell had switched the positions of the pci and the pcie when they made this board. I found a 400 watt power supply that will physically fit into the space though the leads of the from panel might need spliced...

I think i might have found an r7 on ebay that would fit too. tight space for sure.

Anyone have another recommendation, I'm looking for a new solution to this same problem.

AMD Radeon 7750 I think is too big for that space. It might be an inch and doubtful more than that. Im surprised the 610 fit .

The heat sink extends no further than the width of the low profile btacket.

Also this 400 watt power supply will fit into the physical space of the dell optiplex sff http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008551ZI8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_

There are a few others that run around $100 but that one is 50$

A Galaxy GT 610 did indeed work. Heatsink barely touched whatever was next to it. Couldn't close the case though, but my friend dealt with it so he could play something.
  17. The best readily available (on amazon) graphics card that works with the dell optiplex 755 sff is the saphire r7 250 low profile

is your answer the same if it is pci express version 1.0?

the r7 250 is a pcie 3.0 card which will at least not perform as well in that slot.
