PC randomly shuts down after I installed new GPU?

So, i recently upgraded from my 650 ti Boost to an ASUS 780 3GB, and now my PC has started to just turn it self off randomly, and then start by itself 5 minutes later. Does anyone have an idea to why this is happening?

  1. The GTX780 needs a lot more power. What is the brand and model (not just wattage) of your PSU?

Are there any useful entries in the Windows Event Logs?

Im kinda new to this, I think the PSU may be the problem, I'm curently on Cooler Master B500, 500W PSU. That might be the problem..

How much of an PSU upgrade do you think i'll need?

Oh yeah, that PSU is insufficient. A good 550W PSU would be enough. CM offers very few PSUs that are good enough, regardless of claimed wattage. Seasonic or one built by them (e.g. XFX) would be a good choice.
  5. Does sound like the power supply is struggling, but run a few tests first:
Use GPUZ (excellent freebie BTW) to check the new card temperature, it may just be something simple like a loose sticker jamming the cooling fan.
Grab a CPU temperature monitor and check its temperatures as well, it's easy to accidentally dislodge the CPU cooler during an upgrade.
For a PSU about 600-650 Watts from a good maker like: Corsair, Seasonic, Silverstone, FSP, Fractal Design, XFX or EVGA will do the trick.
  6. The low-end Corsair CX are not that great; they're made by CWT (not Seasonic) and use some inferior Samxon capacitors that don't like heat.
  7. ^WORD.

Thanks for the help, will an upgrade to Cooler Master G700, 700W PSU be any good? Its at a pretty decent price (especially here in Norway)
  9. Only if that's one of the new Seasonic-built ones, but I thought that was their "V" series. If not, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot power cord. I couldn't find any reviews, just articles claiming it to be a new, "budget" unit. Based on their history, no thanks.
