new gaming pc ssd/hdd help

Should I buy a 60gb SSD instead of a 1TB hard drive for my first gaming pc?
I can buy the SSD and use an 320gb External Hard Drive temporarily and then upgrade to a TB

I would suggest getting the SSD, as you can use it as the system drive, which will be much faster.

You could either use the external drive as an external drive or, you could use the external drive as an internal drive, but depending on the model this may sacrifice the drive's ability to be used externally (you may have to remove the casing of the external drive).

If you are able to do this, the drive will be able to connect via SATA, which will improve the performance of the drive.
This is entirely dependant on if you would be willing to remove the casing of the drive or not, of course.

Even if you didn't want to do this to the drive, you would still get better performance from buying the SSD and then getting the 1TB drive.

You should also consider spending more and getting a bigger SSD if possible, as this will give you more storage and mean that you do not have to buy the 1TB drive as soon.
