I will have a 770 4g or a 760 2g + sli when I need it. Will SLI'ing 2gb vram make it 4gb? Solving my worrys about not having enough vram to mod. <I love adding lots and lots of mods to games>

No, the same stuff needs to be in each VRAM, so it'll still act as 2GB.

yes, the total VRAM of the SLI config will default to that of the lowest card

Thats also the reason to be wary of VRAM capacities in dual GPU cards like the 690. Says 4GB on the front, but it only has 2GB of effective VRAM since each GPU has 2GB, its not a shared pool.

If that's the case, what are the benefits of an sli setup if it doesnt combine vram?

Double the GPU power pretty much. In the majority of cases 2GB is plenty for 1080p gaming.
If your in need of more VRAM, look into an aftermarket card where they have added more VRAM to it or a HD7900 series card.
