I'm a new builder and I've read through tons of threads and cannot get the red cpu light to turn off on the motherboard.

Built a system for my son:
CPU - AM3+
MB - Sabertooth 990fx R2.0
RAM - 10600 (1333) 8G Corsair
Vid - EVGA 630GT 1GB DDR3
HDD - SSD Crucial 128G
Power - 500W

I've reset the jumpers
I've taken out the battery
I've reset the CPU (checked all the pins)
No flash bios needed, checked the version on ASUS
I've unplugged everything but the CPU and motherboard and still red CPU light

Can anyone help, I'm so frustrated. I don't have spare parts to swap out, but everythings new.

Thanks.

Forgive me because this may seem a bit rude and a stupid question but did you make sure that the power cables for the CPU were in properly? And which specific CPU do you have?

Is the heatsink fan spinning?

No, you're not rude; I'm a newbie so please ask me all the dumb questions because obviously I missed something. No power cables from the CPU, only a fan cable, and yes I plugged that in.

CPU - AMD FX 4-Core FX4100

There should be a cable that plugs in slightly above and to the left of the CPU socket, an 8-pin power cable if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, it's a fan cable for the heatsink; it's plugged in and spins when power supply is on.

Although Blackbird posted a picture of the GEN3 version it will be in the same place as yours.

Blackbird - I feel so dumb! You're exactly correct. I plugged everything else in correctly EXCEPT the actual power to the motherboard, argh! Everything's running smoothly now. I guess I'm glad it was something easy, just could kick myself though. Thanks for the photo and the replies. I really appreciate it.

I have the same problem with same specs except for ram and GPU.

RAM - AMD PERFORMANCE 16GB DDR3

CPU- FX 4100

SSD - VERTEX 3 120GB

PSU - Cooler Master 500W.

GPU - Asus 6850 Overclocked Edition 1GB VRAM.

The computer turns on and then immediately turns off when the CPU LED flashes. I was told it was because the cpu fan is plugged into the 3 pin mobo connecter but the cpu_fan socket on the board is 4 pin and that's where the cpu cooler should be plugged in the mobo isn't detecting it and shuts down to protect the cpu. Also my PSU only has a 4 pin connecter and the mobo has a 8 pin. I plugged in the 4 and I was told this was fine. I need a second opinion cause I can't get it to post. Hod do you clear CMOS on this board????

The couple time's I've had to clear CMOS I just unplugged it from the wall and waited lol. Your manual should have instructions though, if you don't have it, or can't find it let me know and I'll tell you what mine says.

Thank you so much! I was pulling my hair out trying to get my mb to post. The 3 pin was key. Thanks!

Although I don't have the same mobo, the answers in this thread (mobo power cord unseated) saved my from throwing my new PC build out the window haha. I had just put in two new cooling fans and 2 8 GB sticks in my build. CPU fan wouldn't start, and red CPU LED light came on. After checking here, figured out the problem. Thanks guys!!!
