It seems as though the silicon foundry industry has created an artificial shortage of leading-edge fab capacity, in order to increase demand and thus, increase prices and as a result, total revenue as well. "Word on the street is that the market - if not the foundries themselves - may be pumping up the business to make a potential killing on inflated wafer prices in the near future" .
