AMD's AMD Athlon MP 1900+ and AMD-760 MPX chipset
It's dualie fever today with news of two new Athlon MP mobos and AMD's announcement of the processors and chipsets that will make them go. The AMD Athlon MP processor 1900+ features AMD's QuantiSpeed architecture and Smart MP technology but you'll have to wait for benchmarks to see how fast it is due to AMD's new idea of avoiding MHz ratings (for some but not all of its chips). The AMD Athlon MP processor 1900+ is priced at $319 in 1,000-unit quantities. As for the chipset, the AMD-760 MPX is a two-way multiprocessor core logic solution for the Athlon MP family. The 760 MPX provides for a 66MHz/64-bit/32-bit PCI bus and a peripheral bus controller that provides PCI-to-PCI bridging capability. It consists of two chips, the AMD-762 system controller (northbridge), and the AMD-768 peripheral bus controller (southbridge) and supports up to two AMD Athlon MP processors with independent 266MHz front side buses, as well as PC2100 DDR memory and AGP 4x graphics. Motherboards featuring the AMD-760 MPX chipset are planned to be available initially from Abit, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, and Tyan. The chipset is designed to support all AMD Athlon MP processors. AMD expects worldwide availability of the new AMD-760 MPX chipset in the first quarter of 2002 and AMD Athlon MP processor 1900+ in the fourth quarter of 2001.
