AMD rolls out new high-speed bus

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has officially launched its HyperTransport high-speed bus technology. Formerly dubbed Lightning Data Transport, it will allow processors in PCs, networks and communications devices to communicate with each other 24 times faster than they can presently. The technology is central to AMD's strategy for its 64-bit Sledgehammer that will compete against Intel Corp.'s 64-bit Itanium and McKinley processors.

In related news, W.J. (Jerry) Sanders III, AMD's chairman and CEO, will step down at the company's annual shareholder meeting in April 2002, when Hector de J. Ruiz, AMD's current president and COO, will take over as CEO.
