AMD releases 9 watt Sempron processor

Sunnyvale (CA) - AMD announced a new version of its Sempron processor which will be targeted at fanless embedded designs.

Running in a power envelope of 9 watt, the new Sempron 2100+ processor is the lowest power consuming processor of AMD’s 64-bit processor family so far. According to the manufacturer, the socket S1 CPU is designed for single board computers as well as embedded client systems and will run in combination with the recently announced M690T chipset. The 2100+ 64-bit processor is clocked at 1 GHz.

AMD does not publish power specifications for its mobile Sempron CPUs ; regular Sempron processors (3000+ to 3800+) run at a thermal design power (TDP) of 35 or 62 watts watts.

AMD also adjusted the temperature tolerance of the Geode LX 800 CPU to allow a use of the CPU in harsh temperature environments. AMD said that the chip can now operate in the -40 to +85 degrees Celsius range. The LX 800 is rated at a maximum TDP of 3.9 watts.
