AMD Officially Releases Athlon MP Processor Platform

by - source: Tom's Hardware

AMD finally unleashed its multiprocessing platform based on the Athlon MP processor and the AMD-76 MP chipset at Computex today. The setup supports DDR memory and makes use of AMD's Smart MP technology. Multiprocessing workstations and servers based on the Athlon MP processor and the 760 MP chipset will be available from more than 20 manufacturers at frequencies of 1.2GHz and 1GHz, which seems disappointingly slow. Tyan's Thunder platform is currently the only motherboard that will support the new dual processor setup, which may explain why the company got so tweaky about folks leaking information to news sources. The Athlon MP processors are currently priced at $265 for 1.2GHz and $215 for 1GHz frequencies, in 1,000-unit quantities. Our own Thomas Pabst provides a complete overview of the Athlon dualie system here . Get extended Computex show coverage by signing on for Tom's Hard Newsletter here .
