QOTD: Do You Want True 3D Graphics for Games?
Source: Tom's Hardware US – Keywords: amd, nvidia, gpu, 3d, graphics Category : Graphics Cards
Both AMD and Nvidia are recently nearly neck to neck in terms of graphics performance. If you are fortunate enough to own a card from either company, you no doubt are able to play the latest games without a problem--especially when you're running in CrossFire or SLI.
Graphics processors are becoming ever speedy. More speed, more memory, and of course, more features. The latest generation of GPUs offer incredible processing power as well as being extremely programmable. However, in recent years, not many games have been able to take true advantage of some of the most powerful GPUs. Even GPUs from two years ago or older are able to hold their own in recent games without much problem.
Now, 3D glasses are making their way back into the limelight. But this isn't the first time 3D stereo glasses have tried to make a mark with gamers. There have been many failures. Nvidia is clearly making a push to bring them back with its GeForce 3D Vision.
The question of the day is: Do you want true 3D stereo for games or do you care less?
Most of today's games hardly cause our GPUs to break a sweat, and because of their programmability, GPUs are extremely versatile. Needless to say, GPU technology is way ahead of today's games. Perhaps it's a good time now for game developers to take true advantage of recent GPU technology and GPU speeds to do things such as support stereo 3D glasses or add more realism, detail or eye-candy to games.

Would rather have better physics and more innovative games.
Never mind this kind of thing, why isn't someone developing commercial applications using the much easier, far more compelling solution like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
I would rather get the texture / physics correct.
Even the latest "cutting edge" games like Far Cry 2 still don't look photo-realistic.
The intro-videos on consoles still looks light years ahead of anything we get in-game.
Gotta keep cranking them out .. when they can make a computer game look the same as it does in the cinema ... then I'll start paying attention
For me 3D is just a gimmic, and who wants to wear stupid 3d glasses for 2 hours plus? Like MKeeper, i'd much rather have better graphics/textures, physics and gameplay, which In my opinion adds far more immersion in a game than 3D.
@Mi1ez - innovative games? are you mad? Here have some plastic will not work very well glasses and Shhh. Nex you'll be wanting the good old days of the 8bit system - when one man did make innovative games.
I thought the new oled displays would be ideal for tiny 3D glasses.
bend them around each eye so the pupil can look about inside a dome should be a great effect.
Im surprised at the backwardness of people with an interest in technology. Pardon the pun but if everyone had tunnel vision we would still be playing games on 12" screens with huge crts. About 10 years ago I got the chance to use a very heavy virtual reality headset playing that fps/flight game where you are flying along tunnels and shooting (cant remember the name but began with a D I think). The graphics were really basic but it didnt matter as the effect that you got was that they were all around you and you could look around (with headtracking) which was incredibly immersive and exciting. Think of it similarly to being in the "Tron" world in your senses. The only problem was the headset was too heavy and it caused eye strain. Eliminate that and you elevate games even with more basic graphics to a new level. Imagine being immersed in an animated toon world and maybe finding yourself in Springfield in some sort of fun adventure.
Unlike some people I do enjoy 3D stereo gaming WITH "stupid" glasses and spend 2 hours plus per day. Furthermore I got my first shutter glasses with Asus AGP-V7700 Deluxe card (Geforce2 GTS) not too long after it was released and that was so awesome! Now I still do my gaming on 2 polarized DLP's and polarized glasses and still enjoy it. There are very few games that run perfectly well in 3D stereo, mostly because they were not intended to be, yet it still is amazing. 3D stereo gives completely new dimension to the game, makes you experience it in a new way. No offence guys but people who write that they rather have something else than that, almost certainly haven't had a proper 3D stereo gaming experience and only tried analgyph (red/cyan or other) glasses.
I'd rather have proper 3D support in games and the rest can come afterwards.
I'm surprised you thought that those fps/flight games were good.
I remember them being awful. Nothing but lag when you turned your head and low def screens were awful too. The wire mesh holding the pixels together made it look like you were looking through a chain link fence. Maybe that VR was years before its time; but they were trying to sell games based on the gimmick of VR. Which is great for the first 3mins until you realise you’re stood in a crap game.
I live in a photo realistic 3D world with great physics and surrounded by sound technology. I spend most of it at work. I require a more creative and innovative outlet.
3D is on it's way at last in both Tv and games. Wasn't one of the big technical/cost restraints of it needing a 120 Hz (60Hz for each eye) screen at a reasonable price.
With the new glasses and the powerful yet cheap graphics cards etc i can see it's about ready to hit the masses.
Ive not tried any of them but from all accounts the new ones don't lag and don't give eyestrain so i'd give it a go.
And whats with these daily question posts in the news section?? Is this site giving up on posting days old news from other sites and just going for questions now??
I really wanna try this out, shame I just bought a 4870 and a regular monitor not too long ago. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/889/1/
These guys have played with it for a month and it sounds kewl! Apparently L4D is optimised for exactly this, now that would be awesome 3d l4d!!
I would love having this glassen, It would be a totally new experience, by the way having these glasses doesn't mean that you have to use them always when playing... I think special games programmed for 3d vision could be great.
Immagine a horror scene where a atacking "squig" sudennly jumps into you face.
The only prob is that the 120 mhz displays and the glasses+Gpu together cost to much.
I can't wait until they've perfected the whole "Holodeck" thing where you're so immersed that it's indistinguishable from real life. Once graphics are THAT perfect on every game developer's can't use the graphics to sell the game. They're going to actually be forced to make games that are original, and fun to play and re-play! I'm tired of linear FPS games that look amazing but play exactly the same as you trawl through the same scripted events time after time...
wow that head tracking video is really good....sort of gives you 3D for free....wonder if it could be done with two spatially separated cameras using some kind of object recognition software to recognize the users head....wouldn't have to wear the equivalent of the infra red bar then.
