AMD launches 700 MHz Athlon
At least two leading OEMs have agreed to support Advanced Micro Devices' 700-MHz Athlon processor.
With the industry's fastest x86 architecture thus far, the newly-released chip will compete with Intel's 600-MHz Pentium III, which AMD said is less equipped to handle functions such as digital content creation, 3-D graphics processing, commercial 3-D modeling, CAD/workstation, image compression, speed recognition, and a variety of mainstream applications.
Both IBM and Compaq have selected the device for use in their next-generation platforms, including Compaq's Presario line of desktop PCs.
