AMD cuts deal with Pionex
Following closely on news that Gateway will offer AMD's Athlon processor in the new Select PC line of computers, AMD has announced that PC vendor Pionex Elite will also adopt the high-end chip ina new family of corporate desktops and workstations.
Observers say tight supplies of Intel Pentium III chips - specifically the 733MHz PIII - are driving more PC makers into AMD's arms.
Pionex's Elite Professional Workstations will be available with 600MHz, 700MHz and 800MHz Athlons, at prices ranging from $1,999 to $5,399.
Starting at $1,299,Gateway's Select PC will feature a 600MHz Athlon chip, 64MB of RAM, a 10.5GB hard drive and a 17" monitor.
