AMD Athlon XP Processor 1900+ Surfaces

by - source: Tom's Hardware

As you've probably heard, AMD's Athlon XP processor 1900+ was released yesterday. I almost didn't cover it in Hard News because Frank and Bert already posted the full story on the chip over in the CPU Guide, which ended up as the top story on THG. However, the newest story always goes at the top of the page (so it'll move down the list in the days to come) and you don't want to miss checking out the massive amounts of benchmarking those guys did, so I'll give you the short story here but encourage you to check out the more complete story here . The AMD Athlon XP processor 1900+ features AMD's QuantiSpeed architecture, which the company says "delivers up to a 25-percent performance advantage versus competitive processors on real-world applications." Though it's called the 1900+ it's not a 1900 MHz processor since AMD claims (and most of us agree) that MHz ratings don't always equate to speed. It's just a name and the chip doesn't have a rating that equates to performance until AMD puts its True Performance Initiative into place. In the mean time, to see how fast it is, you'll have to be content with Frank and Bert's benchmarks, which are a very big part of their "AMD Turns Up The Heat: Athlon XP 1900+" article posted yesterday. The AMD Athlon XP processor 1900+ is priced at $269 in 1,000-unit quantities.
