AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Processor
Back in the old days, the time between the release of new processors could be measured in years. While advances in microprocessors are always something to celebrate, many of us miss the days when our machine would be "top of the line" for more than a couple of months, as is the case nowadays. Today, a little less than two months after the introduction of the Athlon XP 1900+ , AMD is telling the world about the newest new Athlon: the XP 2000+. While the new processor is currently being manufactured using the 0.18-micron copper process, AMD's "Thoroughbred" core, scheduled to begin shipping this quarter, will size shrink the die size for the Athlon XP to 0.13 micron technology. The XP 2000+ runs at 1.67GHz, has a 128 kB L1 cache, a 256 kB L2 cache, and 37.5 million transistors. In 1,000-unit quantities, the Athlon XP 2000+ is priced at $339 - $70 more than the XP 1900+. AMD also wants you to know that, while the OPGA (organic pin grid array) packaging is gradually changing from brown to green, the color of the packaging has no effect on performance. The same goes for cars.
