AMD and Fujitsu Create a Big Flash
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced that it is jointly forming a new entity with Fujitsu that will combine the flash memory technologies of both companies. The new company will be named FASL, with AMD having a 60% ownership and Fujitsu owning 40% interest in the company. This new joint venture will reportedly allow both companies to share marketing and sales efforts, as well as technology. With 7,000 employees and its worldwide headquarters in Sunnyvale, California as well as Japanese headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, FASL plans to begin operations in Q3 of 2003. Both companies will contribute significantly to the new venture: it is reported that each company will contribute combined assets of $2.5 billion. AMD will contribute all of its flash memory group, fabrication plant in Texas, flash memory and test facilities in Malaysia, Thailand and China, as well as its Sunnyvale-based Submicron Development Center. Fujitsu will contribute all of its flash memory division, and an assembly and test facility in Malaysia. The sole distributors for FASL will be AMD and Fujitsu.
