AMD adds on to Athlon
AMD plans a family of several new Athlon brand names, including a high-performance desktop brand and separate versions aimed at enterprise and consumer markets.
The Athlon will be branded first as a high-performance desktop chip. The processor, formerly known as K7, will be called Athlon Professional. Athlon Pro will power high-performance desktop PCs from companies such as Gateway, sources said.
Later, the Athlon Ultra brand name will be intoroduced for servers and workstations.
An additional brand name for lower-priced consumer Athlon chips will follow. However, this brand is likely to remain unavailable for some time, as AMD is not ready to cannibalize sales of its K6-2 and K6-III chips into this market.
