AMD 3D gamer chips key to new supercomputer

The University of Kentucky's new 64-processor Linux supercomputer is using 700-MHz AMD Athlon microprocessors. Though the processors were designed to improve graphics associated with computer games, the architect of the computer says the same characteristics that facilitate 3D graphics result in faster mathematical computations than the current Intel line. AMD, planning to enter the business market this year, donated the chips to the University and hopes to use the experience to help prepare the company for its expansion out of the personal computer market.
