Alcatel-Lucent to lay off thousands, despite big patent win
It looks like Alcatel-Lucent’s big patent win against Microsoft won’t help more than 1,700 European employees who will be getting pink slips soon. The company is laying off those employees which is part of a global reduction of 12500 jobs. Most of the European layoffs will happen in Germany, followed by Spain.
Alcatel-Lucent claims Microsoft violated its MP3 compression patent and successfully won $1.5 billion Dollars in U.S. District Court this week. However the inevitable appeals will probably delay or even cancel out any payment for the next few years.
