Airgo and Alienware claim wireless network faster than Ethernet on new notebooks

Networking heads Airgo Networks have teamed up with Alienware in order to provide what they boast is a wireless network that runs faster than wired Ethernet networks. The two new laptops from Alienware will feature Airgo’s Gen3 True MIMO, which will be jammed into the AMD Turion 64 X2-based 17" Aurora m9700 and 19" Aurora mALX notebooks.

"Because high performance users are increasingly embracing mobile platforms, Airgo’s Gen3 True MIMO technology underscores Alienware’s ongoing commitment to delivering the highest performance systems featuring uncompromised processing, graphics, storage, display and wireless technologies," said Mark Vena, vice president of marketing for Alienware.

Airgo’s True MIMO technology has been adopted as the core of the new IEEE 802.11n MIMO interoperability standard. The True MIMO Gen3 products are 802.11a/b/g compatible, are Wi-Fi certified, and can be used with any other Wi-Fi certified 802.11 device on a network, says Airgo. Airgo claims that their third generation True MIMO chipset supports TCP/IP networking throughput of more than 140 Mb/s with uncompressed traffic, which, they say, surpasses the performance of wired 100BaseT Ethernet.

The True MIMO Gen3 chipset also features three integrated radios, which they claim leads to a reduction in the overall power consumption.
