Aimster to unite IM services
While the US government contemplates forcing America Online to open up its instant messaging service, the people behind Aimster are preparing to bridge AOL's services with Microsoft's MSN Instant Messenger, Yahoo's Instant Messenger, and others. Aimster works with AOL's Instant Messenger to enable users to perform Napster-like searches of other users' files and trade music. The new version of the program, according to a spokesman for the unincorporated Aimster "programming collective," will enable interaction between the various services, rendering any move to force AOL to open its technology moot.
In related news, Bill Gates personally called the chairman of the FCC to express his support for government action preventing an instant messaging monopoly.
