Youtube launches Video Identification tool

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Youtube has launched a new filtering tool which will help block the unauthorised sharing of videos.

Until now, Youtube had been relying on users or companies notifying them of the presence of copyrighted material and the site, upon receipt of this information, would remove the offending content. The tool gives the owners of copyrighted video the option to sell ads around their material, if they want the clips to remain on the site.

The Google-owned company has launched Video Identification in light of the recent $1bn lawsuit taken against them by Viacom for the spreading of thousands of clips the company owned the copyrights to. Viacom is reportedly happy about the launch of the new technology although it is unsure whether it will affect the lawsuit which is due to hit court later in the month.

Google purchased the video website for over $1.5 billion nearly a year ago and YouTube began working on the technology with Google shortly after.
