YouTube Announces Plans to Stream 1080p Video

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

YouTube has announced plans to stream video in 1080p.

YouTube this week announced in a blog post that, starting next week, the Google-owned video hosting site will start streaming content in high definition.

"Starting next week, YouTube's HD mode will add support for viewing videos in 720p or 1080p, depending on the resolution of the original source, up from our maximum output of 720p today," said Software Engineer Billy Biggs.

YouTubers should see the change over the next few days and the site is encouraging users to up their monitors to 1080p so they can really enjoy full screen videos.

Bigg says the folks at YouTube are in the process of re-encoding all the 1080p videos users have already uploaded.

This is going to make ISPs whine even more about their poor overburdened networks being abused by relentless demonic users

I don't really see the need for it, not yet.

What I would like to see is the layout fixed..such was the discontentment over this new layout, that YT had to roll back the switch-over. Even after it was implemented, it didn't work.

I'd rather have decent streaming from standard resolutions, than be forced to use this new layout along with bandwidth-sucking HD content, and stupid claims made against people that use a bit of music in a video, or take one or two clips from TV. You Tube is becoming far too corporate.

youtube is going the way of the dodo.

Already companies like BBC and ITV post things on youtube. With the high def content it will end up being full of commercial c**p. Adverts will be included in clips and the copyright police will go to town.

It's like tourism. The better a website is, more people will visit it. Then the website is changed to accomodate a wider audience and it loses what it origianlly started with, ending up like Benidorm!
