MSFT Patents Dual, Wired and Wireless Controller
Microsoft has patented a type of dual controller that is both wired and wireless.
There are pros and cons to wired and wireless controllers. With the former, you know you're not going to run out of battery mid-game, but you can't really go very far. A wireless controller allows for a lot more movement, but you might find yourself low on controller juice at a pivotal part of the game.
A patent filed by Microsoft with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier this year attempts to solve this dilemma by being both wireless and wired. By the sounds of things, you'll be able to switch while you're playing and the controller would be able to inform currently played game to flip between the two. SlashGear reports that the game wouldn't need to be paused, and it could automatically keep track of which controller goes with which player (and their accompanying saved games).

ehh, ps3 controller, xbox-play&charge kit anyone?
seem to be getting a lot of spam in the comments sections lately..
If my ps3 controller goes flat I just plug it in and keep playing, how is ms idea new?
ehh, ps3 controller, xbox-play&charge kit anyone?
Xbox play and charge kits still use Wireless to communicate with the Xbox, Even though it resets the controller. Daft I know.
PS3 controllers however switch to USB mode when plugged in.
This can be proven very simply, with the fact it is possible to use your Sixaxis on your PC using only a USB cable. This has not only been thought of by someone else, but actually implemented by someone else.
And if the worst comes to the worst on my PS3, I just pause the game, reassign another controller and carry on where I left off.
Nice to see Microsoft looking to expand functionality and usability of the 360, but something as fundamental as this should've been considered at the very beginning, and I can't see how they can patent something that has already existed on the PS3 for years - unless they're patent trolling and looking to retrospectively screw Sony for millions.
isnt that just a ps3 controller?you dont need to pause a game to plug it in.

Ohhhhhhhh so that's why i've never been able to just plug a wireless controller into a plug n play kit into my pc and expect it to work. That always confused me why i couldn't and especially since the pc detected and installed drivers for it.
Thanks for clearing that up, I thought like the PS3 the signal reroutes to through the plug and play charge kit.

Yeah...but not patented..is it just me or are companies just patenting everything they think of, even ideas others have already created and used...nice that the ps3 controller works that easily with a pc, be cool to try it out as I use a 360 wired controller for windows.
