Cataclysm Sells 4.7M Units in One Month

Cataclysm is now the fastest-selling PC game ever.

Monday Blizzard Entertainment said that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the third expansion for its insanely popular MMORPG on the PC, sold more than 4.7 million units in the first month of its release. It's also now the fastest selling PC game of all time, stealing the crown away from the previous champ and second WoW expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.

"We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment.

Cataclysm was simultaneously released in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand on December 7. According to Blizzard, the expansion sold 3.3 million copies in the first day of its release. The expansion then became available in Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau two days later on December 9.

Prior to the launch of Cataclysm, WoW's subscriber population had grown to more than 12 million players globally. To keep up with the growing demand, Blizzard is currently hiring on new hands to help with WoW and other tasty Blizzard titles. "We’ve been floored by the community's response so far, and we'd like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone," Morhaime said.
