Halifax blocks all payments to Blizzard Entertainment
If you’re a fan of World of Warcraft and you bank with Halifax you might have a wee bit of trouble paying for your subscriptions from now on.
Why is that you ask ? Well, because Halifax have only gone and blocked all payments to Blizzard Entertainment (the company responsible for World of Warcraft) because of the habitual use of stolen credit cards to pay for subscriptions.
The bank’s decision to block Blizzard payments was discovered when a Halifax client, Brit Michael, complained that he couldn’t pay for his WoW subscription.
The bank responded to Michael by telling him their fraud analysts have "made the decision to decline all Blizzard transactions due to the high volume of fraud and a high incidence of compromised details."
Brit Michael then reported this incident to the Register because he thought it was a bit out of the ordinary.
The Reg promptly contacted Halifax for a statement and enquired as to whether they were the only bank partaking in such practices but received no response.
We at Toms UK and IRL also contacted the bigwigs in Halifax but it turns out we’re no more favourable than the Reg reporters.
We’ll let you know if they get back to us, watch this space . . .
Update : A spokesperson for Halifax got back to us just this second and said that they have no idea what the other banks are doing and that we’d have to ask them. . .
"You would need to ask the other banks what their policies are with regard blocking of sites for transaction, we would not be aware of what they are doing."
There you go. . .
