XP Users Aren't Really Jumping on Windows 7

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

So far, Windows XP users are keeping their distance until the hyped-up dust cloud dissipates.

Here's no big surprise: Windows XP users aren't really jumping on the Windows 7 express. Why? Because they're comfortable. Because they're afraid of change thanks to the blunders with Windows Vista. InfoWorld verifies that analysis, claiming that its Windows Pulse tracking service determined that 64-percent of its readers still use the legacy operating system.

According to the survey, 4-percent of real-world PC consumers now use Windows 7, many of which are new users, and not those who have upgraded from Vista or (if any) XP. InfoWorld claims that 10-percent of its readers now use the new OS, with Vista running at the 30-percent level.

"As Windows 7 picks up user share, it seems to be making most of its gains at the expense of Vista," InfoWorld reports. "In fact, there seems to be a direct correlation between Windows 7 adoption and Vista abandonment, with the latter losing a percentage point and the former gaining the same in a little over a week."

It's speculated that the early Windows 7 "surge" will eventually come to a slow grind as the hype wears off and corporations begin to refresh their systems with Windows 7.

I would change to windows 7 if it was not for the fact my Dell D410 with Centrino 1.86ghz and 2 gb ram video system does not have a driver for it so i cannot get off xp. I am dual Booting ubuntu 9.10 now. I hate ms and intel..

If you can't move away from XP that's fine. If you won't move away from XP then seeya, we're off. Vista ultimately will go down in history as Windows ME: The Reprise so sticking to your XP guns (as I did) was a wise move.

But Windows 7 is worth the move IF you can because let's be honest XP no longer cuts the mustard. Hardware has moved on since XP and you need your OS to evolve in order to keep up - we are now on the cusp of that.

Hm. I currently run XP Pro and have played about with W7 using VMWare Workstation. The aim of doing it this way was for the sake of comparison and just to check compatibility. Now, while i find W7 is a very good OS with some features i admire and would like, these alone are not enough to make me migrate. Why? It isn't because i am an XP fanboy or anything like that, it just isn't *currently* worth the downtime. The performance is similar to XP, so that is not a reason to upgrade. All my apps and games will work, but they do now in XP. Only my thoughts admittedly, but i feel this is similar to why some XP users have no intention *yet* to upgrade.

XP won't be much good for much longer as a legacy OS. Windows 7 is excellent and I've been trying to use it as much as I can for the last couple of weeks. So far it's been flawless on a variety of hardware. If it had a desktop manager as good as Compiz or (whatever it's called on) OS X I'd use it as my primary OS (and yes, I've tried Cube Desktop etc).

If you wanna use Windows then you should get Windows 7. And I wouldn't even wait for the first Service Pack.

Don't wanna sound like a cock but are you sure? I installed it on my mum's notebook and spent ages looking for a graphics driver. The manufacturer or vendor didn't have one so I tried alternatives and none of those worked. Then, after the first Windows update, a driver was available from MS. I felt like a right tit. Works great now.

Regardless. Use Ubuntu anyway. And keep Windows for emergencies.

Win 95 good, Win 98 bad, Windows 2000 good, ME bad, XP good (eventually), Vista bad, Win 7...

I'm hoping they're on track for a good.

If Vista had been as good as Windows 7 now than there wouldn't be such and I stress the such! a negative opinion about it. The market share would have been better for MS too, but that didn't happen. Now...The two OS that people would rather buy or rather use is either XP or Win 7.
Sadly, nowadays everyone notices that if you want XP on your ( new ) machine than you need the drivers that are ever harder to find.
Wanted or not...XP will eventually be history. :(

I have had experiance with all 3 of those operating systems. Using XP for the longest, this is how I'd personally rate them along with my reasons why.

1st: XP

It's a brick, while the visuals on it are not as sexy as that on Vista or 7, it's the old man of the three. May be a bit behind but it has everything most computer users will need, especially for offices. Being the cheapest of the lot it's functions are wonderful and (practically) anything there is for Vista or 7, there is for XP.

2nd: Windows 7

I had a laptop that came ready with Vista, I'll rant about that after this. 7 is wonderful, all the added gadgets mean that I don't need task manager open to look at CPU and RAM usage, the clock comes out in a nice, sleek display along with daily weather report that's updated by the hour on the fly. The added functionalities are wonderful, though the new menu styles take a bit of getting used to and even after having vista/7 GUI for a few months now, I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Along with support for modern high-end equipment, this is a nice piece of software that's still new so updates and such will only make it better.

Perhaps the only thing that annoys me a bit is the fact that some older games are incompatable with it, though other than that. It's a nice OS to have if you got the money.

3rd Vista:

Even hearing, let alone typing that name makes me cringe. For never in my life had I had so many troubles and problems with an operating system. I jumped at the chance to get 7 and trust me, any of you that DO have Vista, remove that abomination of an OS. It's basically XP.5, it looks nice sure, though basically it's a whore. That's the best term for it, this is why.

Looks nice, will make you want it when you see others using it without a problem. Though when you get it, you get to see the nasty surprises that lay within. Takes a lot of preformance needlessly and gives only visuals in return, save for when your screen isn't blue.

(For those of you that didn't get that last one I'm talking about for the times that you're not getting a blue screen)

blue screen? I've only had blue screen twice in a couple of years of vista, and that was when plugging a 'in' cable into the 'out' socket of my sound card, so my bad...

I got multiple blue screen with Vista at random. Happened a few times and then I got Win 7 and no a single problem so far. Aside from the fact that Vista is a failed product anyway, uses too much computer resources and is far slower than xp or 7. I personally have a strong resentment against that OS.

I have migrated from XP to Win 7, not because it is any better (if anything I prefer XP) but because the pre-order deal made it prudent for me to do it now rather than later. There are lots of nice features to 7 and it is a damn sight faster than Vista, but they have moved so many items needlessly from control panel etc versus XP and it is full of features I will never need or use. From an office perspective there is nothing that 7 adds that XP doesnt have. We have just rolled out 7 across our organisation and the response is positive many because of appearance rather than functionality
