Apple: Win Tabs 'Heavy,' Android Tabs 'Bizarre'

by - source: Epochtimes

Apple’s revenue was not the only thing discussed during yesterday’s earnings call. During the Q&A, COO Tim Cook took the time to talk about the iPad’s Android OS- and Windows-based competitors.

Speaking about Windows-based tablets, Cook said they (Apple) had seen a distinct lack of interest in them from customers.

“From our point of view and what we’ve seen, customers, frankly, just are not interested in them,” he told listeners on the call. He also said they are “fairly big and heavy and expensive, they have very weak battery life, they require a keyboard or a stylus as an input device.”

The Windows tablet market isn’t quite as crowded the Android tablet market, however, Cook revealed that he doesn’t see Android devices as a threat either. The Chief Operating Office criticized them because they run an OS built for smartphones.

“And so basically you wind up with kind of a scaled-up Smartphone, which is a bizarre product, in our view,” he said.

When asked about Android tablets touting Google’s specially developed tablet OS, Honeycomb, Cook was dismissive, referring to them as vapor” because of the shortage of information when it came to release dates and pricing.

So there you have it. While some people may be calling Motorola’s stunning Tegra 2 Xoom an iPad killer, Apple believes the iPad doesn’t even have any competition. No doubt we’ll hear more on all of this when the iPad 2 is announced.

“From our point of view and what we’ve seen, frankly, just are not interested in them...”

Well of course Apple can't really see anything from their point of view as they're all living inside the Steve Job's distortion field.

“And so basically you wind up with kind of a scaled-up Smartphone, which is a bizarre product, in our view.”

That's funny, I swear that's what literally everyone who isn't an Apple sheep was saying about the iPad, weird...

In conclusion, this little rant was to reassure the sheep and the shareholders that Apple will be strong this year. It also outed that this Tim Cook guy is basically another Steve Jobs (asshole) in the making who plain refuses to credit anything outside of Cupertino with any form of dignity or admiration.

As someone who has Zero use for a "Smart Phone" or "Tablet" I recently had the chance to use an i phone and an equivelant Android based phone side by side.
Having spent a couple of minuites trying to access this very website using the i phone i gave up and 30 seconds later i was navigating Toms on the Android phone.
Thats all i ever needed to know really.

So iOS on the iPad isn't the same one running on the iPhone? So the iPad isn't a scaled up smartphone too? And I've not seen an Android tablet that uses a keyboard or stylus for input yet.

THIS is why Apple get bashed so much - the utter, total bullshit, outright lies and head-in-ass view of the entire world (and the resulting mockery of their customer base, although they're too blinkered by glass and aluminium fruit to actually see it).

Well, the simple fact is, if you want your apps to be usable on multiple platforms, you need to make them similar or emulate the environment. If the iPad's successor is really going to have such a high resolution, Apple will have to develop a proper tablet OS and build in the functionality to use apps which will operate at a far lower resolution (thus upscaling them - eww). As it is, the iPad is no more powerful than an iPhone and sounds a bit like playing games on a DSi XL as opposed to a DS Lite - a bit of a missed opportunity. So, slating your competitors for what you've done yourselves is a bit short-sighted. I'd like to see a Swype-style keyboard on the iPad to add some variety. Does one exist?

I do like the iPad, though, don't get me wrong. One of my bosses like to make music on his whilst he's sat on the train and he swears by the things. It's far from being a light device, though. In the end, if it does what you want, that's great. I don't think we need someone from Apple telling us what another machine is good or bad at.

Wow, M$ were really caught on the back foot with the success of tablets runnin interfaces designed for touch-screen. Considering that windows has been on tablet-like computers since ~2002/3 they have had ample opportunity. I don't but the argument that tablets don't "need" a full-featured OS - I'm not going to buy anything that is locked into one particular app store and has restrictive connectivity (like no USB for example). What they do need is an OS that is designed for touch and it turns out that so-far over-sized mobile phone OSes have fitted that bill. Android 2.x isn't really designed to work well with tablets so I'm not sure how good these tablets are for end-users but Android 3.0 will supposedly change all that. The iPad has the usual momentum of anything surrounded by the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field(TM), but without any serious competition from M$, Android already seems to be having a field day. I wonder whether android tablets could be the devices which finally introduce Linux and FOSS to the "ordinary folk".
