Microsoft Launches 'Buy PC, Get Xbox Free' for Students Program

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Spend $700 on a Windows 7 PC, get a shiny new Xbox 360 (4 GB) console for free. Not a bad deal.

Thursday Microsoft announced a plan that should give the PC industry a little jolt in revenue. Starting May 22 (Sunday), students who purchase a Windows 7-based PC retailing at $699 or more will receive an Xbox 360 4 GB console for free. The offer will be available at participating retailers for current (and verified) students in the U.S. while supplies last (or until September 3).

"A hot new Windows 7-based PC with a free Xbox 360 is the ultimate productivity, social and entertainment package for students," said Kathleen Hall, general manager of Windows Marketing at Microsoft. "In one shot, with this great offer, Microsoft is giving students everything they need for a successful new school year."

Although parents can purchase any Windows 7-based PC, Microsoft recommends a few specifically for students like the sleek HP Pavilion DM4, the colorful Dell Inspiron 14r and the lightweight Samsung Series 9. Indecisive parents and students are also directed to visit the PC Scout, an interactive app on Microsoft's website that will help locate the perfect match.

"If you have a .edu email address, you can purchase your new PC through one of our participating retailers including Dell.com, HP.com or Microsoft Store," said Microsoft's Kristina Libby in an official blog. "If you don't have a .edu address or prefer to walk into a store, touch the PCs and test their features, bring your Student ID into Best Buy or any Microsoft Store retail location. Check with your chosen retailer for additional specifics they may have in place."

Similar student-focused offers will be coming soon in Canada and France, Microsoft said.

Guess who's coming to college?
